Starbucks Sunday: Miss Literati: Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler

BITTERSWEETHudson Avery’s dreams of becoming a renowned ice skater are shattered the day her parents split up. Deciding to move on with her life and leave behind the dream that was so closely tied to her father, Hudson begins working in her mom’s diner, baking amazingly decadent cupcakes.

Now, three years later, 16-year-old Hudson has turned her job into a lifestyle, spending countless hours helping her mom keep the diner afloat. When Hudson learns there’s an ice skating competition offering a full scholarship to its winner, she considers taking her skates out of retirement. After all, a scholarship could be her only ticket out of Watonka, NY.

One night while out on the ice, Hudson bumps into (literally) Josh, an uber cute hockey player that is totally swoon-worthy. From there she gets roped into helping out his team, which hasn’t won a game in ten years.

And the drama pursues. Love triangles. Betrayal. Disappointment. Tears. Laughter. It’s all there! But more importantly, there are apologies, self-discovery, and important life lessons.

We fell in love with this book for a multitude of reasons. For one, Hudson is a flawed character. She’s selfish at times, tends to take the people in her life for granted, and some of her decisions left us wide-eyed and baffled. But what made her so admirable was her development over time. Her self-discovery and evolvement was character development at its finest.
